Kwaito artiste and Mabala Noise hit maker Thokozani Ndlovu, better known by his stage name L’vovo Derrango, is teaming up with other musos to honour taxi drivers in Durban.
He made this public via his verified Twitter account, @LvovoSA, when he tweeted: “Today was a very special day. Mzansi it’s time to change how we see things. These men hv drove our families 2 n from work n play a huge role in society! Let’s understand n educate them so we can all live in harmony on the roads. Do u not feel that they need to be honored?”
Lvovo, who has made it clear he is comfortable being tubby and does not get angry when people joke about his size but rather describes it as part of his identity, is not on this mission alone. He is in league with Distruction Boyz.
The Amazing Hundred crooner, who had collaborated with the likes of DJ Bongz, DJ Tira, Danger, Naima Kay, Efelow, and Dr Malinga and Professor, also tweeted that the braai would hold August 16 to show their appreciation to taxi drivers. He also made mention of star singers Sjava and Oskido during their days as hustlers in taxis.
On how he came about the idea, he tweeted: “Recently I have been looking at how we created DKM (Durban Kwaito Music)and now with the growth of GQOM MUSIC. The first people that came to mind are Taxi drivers, Taxi drivers are the family members we take for granted but always support us even when no one wants to support us.”
He said taxi drivers have never been given a “thank you,” and this he will change. He tweeted: “Siyabonga for helping us influence people with something new when radio or TV refused to take a gamble. All we see in taxis drivers are people who block the way in traffic or bad drivers.“
So, come August 16, taxi drivers in Durban will have a reason to smile.
